On October 16th, Fall 2023 Capstone students gathered in Peabody Commons to share their Map the System presentations with the VU community. Twenty-seven student teams researched questions related to an AI challenge connected to the industries they are partnering with for their Capstone semesters. Students built community through engaging in a scavenger hunt and a crowd sourcing activity to learn from peers and refine their Map the System questions.
Map the System is a global systems thinking competition and curriculum that prepares students to understand and help resolve complex social-ecological challenges. The HOD Capstone course, 4951: Critical Reflexivity and Systems Thinking, incorporates the Map the System curriculum to accomplish student learning objectives. VU Map the System student teams compete for a chance to advance to the Global Finals hosted by Oxford University’s Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. A special thank you to David Golann and Jennifer Castle, Peabody Librarians, and HD McKay, Owen Systems Librarian, for spending the morning as evaluators and for meeting with the students to build their bibliographies/revise their Map the System research questions. They selected three student teams to advance to the VU Map the System Competition based on based on clarity and importance of research question, findings grounded in robust research, ability to articulate relevant of the project and impact of AI on chosen industry, and aesthetically pleasing and substantive visuals (representing challenge background, interacting causes and effects, stakeholders, past and present solutions and impact gaps).
